The buildings and open spaces of the Michigan State Fairgrounds are home to numerous annual events and expositions, including livestock shows, motorcycle conventions and auctions. During the last days of August and earliest part of September, the grounds are used for the Michigan State Fair, the oldest fair in the nation. The fair was held in various locations since its 1849 inception but since 1905, it has made the fairgrounds its home. It is located less than ten miles northwest of downtown Detroit, in the suburb of Highland Park.
